Alex’s appearance follows a month-long roadshow across Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, during which the Williams FW48 show car toured shopping centres nationwide, giving fans the chance to see a Formula 1 car up close and win a VIP experience with Alex in person.
South Africa last hosted a Grand Prix in 1993, when Williams driver, Alain Prost, won at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in the FW15C challenger. More than three decades on, Alex’s visit marks the first time an active Williams driver has officially returned to South African soil - a fitting continuation of that history ahead of the team’s 50th anniversary in 2027.
With only 1% of fans worldwide able to attend a Formula 1 race in their lifetime, Atlassian Williams F1 Team’s mission is to bring F1 to the fans, taking the sport beyond the circuit and into the heart of cities around the world. Fans have always been central to the team’s approach, including through its Fan Zones in key race cities such as Melbourne, Austin and Las Vegas, which have welcomed more than 340,000 fans over the past two years.
The visit reflects the global reach of both brands and their shared alignment with a sport that connects fans across the world. The partnership between Super Group and Atlassian Williams F1 Team is a natural extension of that presence, bringing a Formula 1 driver appearance and team activations to a market that has shown deep and sustained engagement with the sport.
Alex Albon: “I’ve always wanted to go to South Africa – it's a beautiful country, and South African fans are some of the most passionate in motorsport. Bringing F1 to the fans, and doing things a bit differently, is what the Atlassian Williams F1 Team is all about – so this is exactly the kind of moment we love being part of. A big thank you to Super Group for making this trip to South Africa happen. It is incredible to be the first Williams driver here since Alain Prost won in 1993 and I’d love to see a race in Africa one day – and I definitely want to be back myself!”
Neal Menashe, CEO of Super Group: “Formula 1 has an incredibly passionate following in South Africa, and we are proud to help bring the sport closer to fans through our partnership with Atlassian Williams F1 Team. Seeing the excitement generated by the roadshow across the country has been remarkable, and Alex’s visit is a fitting culmination of that journey. At Super Group, we are committed to creating memorable experiences for sports fans, and this is a unique opportunity to give South Africans an unforgettable Formula 1 experience.”
